w00t broadband!

Post by Hellblade on Thu Jan 07 2010, 04:41

I got broadband today Very Happy
Well, I've got the modem set up, I just have to wait for it to be 'activated' or w/e, the guy at the store said it generally happens in 1-2 days, and he said it will probably be ready tomorrow afternoon.

I got a free wireless modem, and "I" bought an adapter for my PC but I haven't put it in yet because my computer only has 1 PCI slot and well, dial up is better then no internet at all Razz

It is only a 3GB plan and when I reach the limit it goes down to about dial up speed....but my HDD is mostly full and well, I should be able to manage, considering I've had dial up for years....

It doesn't have an artificial cap on it (until I reach my limit) so it'll go as fast as my line will allow Wink

Also, what I realised with getting a wireless modem, I can probably connect my nintendo DS to it, if I get bored Razz

I has broadband! Unfortunately, my wireless is somewhat slow. Not too bad, but when I'm downloading games from Steam on my laptop, it takes a long time.

It still hasn't been activated :'(

However, I did get bored and clean the dust from my computer....there wasn't atually all that much...but I didn't take the fan/heatsink from my processor because I don't want to break it and since I don't really know how to I thought it was best to leave it but from what I could see, there wasn't much in it....and I noticed I hadn't screwwed in my video card but I couldn't find a freaking screw that would fit so it is still unscrewed but it's been fine for over a year like that so I'd say it hasn't/won't do any harm Razz

And I cleaned it out today because I thought, when my broadband is activated, do I really want to spend time cleaning the dust from my PC or use it Razz

I doubt they will activate it tomorrow (they probably don't work on Sundays...but they might...and they SHOULD so I can use my broadband!)

On;y thing is since they don't tell you when they have activated it, I don't know if they haven't activated it or there is just something wrong Shocked
My sister had troubles with hers and the technician had to get someone else to fix it for her...

I wants meh broadband!

They don't tell you when they activate it?

Why ever not? I have been with many ISP's in my time and they all say when they activate it.

One ISP told me via email though... I mean if you don't have internet how do they expect you to check your email Laughing but I was checking my emails via 3g and noticed it.

Usually they phone though.

Well, Ithey guy in the store just told me once some light/s on the modem light up (he said the light that said ADSL but there is not light that says ADSL so I presume he means the lights 'Internet' and 'Broadband'), he didn't say anything about getting a phone call or w/e....so I might get one Wink

It's with Telecom and my phone line is done with them too so they ~might~ give me a call or something Wink

Yeah. But the amount of time I look at the modem to see if it has lit up yet, I doubt I would miss it even if I don't get a call Razz

One thing with dial up is, when you sign up to it, it works straight away Razz

Re: w00t broadband!

Post by Hellblade on Tue Jan 12 2010, 03:58

Don't grats me yet, stupid ISP hasn't fully activated it yet :@

Yesterday, when I was using dial up, it just disconnected and when I tried to reconnect it said there was no dial tone, so I plugged in the phone and it wouldn't work so I presumed they were activating it...I was half right....after about 5mins when the phone line came on again, the broadband light lit up but the internet light still wasn't so it wasn't fully actiavted...I had even put in my wireless card thinking it would be activated soon, what a waste of time that was. I had left the wireless card in incase it was fully activated but it hadn't by about 9pm so I turned off the modem. At around about 11pm I was bored (seeing how I had no internet) so I turned on the modem and the internet light was on, I tried it, it got further then before but it still hadn't completely activated. This morning same thing so my mum called the helpline thing and they just said it hadn't been fully activated yet so try again after 7pm....it is now close to 9pm and it doesn't wor. I put in my dial up modem. The helpdesk said that recently they have had alot more customers joining their broadband...but in my opinion, that means s**t to me, in the store the guy said it normally takes 2 days to do, it has been 5 days, how many people can possiably sign up to the broadband for them to need to take alot longer...sure 2 of those days were saturday/sunday, but if they have all these new people, they should work longer. Not to mention, they hadn't contacted us in anyway to say there would be delays or w/e.

I honestly don't know what the hell they are doing, if the phoneline was turned off for 5mins to ctivated broadband on the line, why can't they do waht else need to be done at the same time, and if it is done in different "departments" or w/e, why is one "department" over a day later then another?

Wow... that sucks. They didn't even try to contact you about it? They're probably just a bunch of henchmen hired to push buttons and such. They don't know how to deal with technical problems. Razz

Since leaving the store, they haven't contacted me in anyway, sure the phoneline could be in use with the dial up, but they could leave a message.

Haha, I'd say so Razz

Nothing at all has happened to it today, so it better be useable tomorrow :@

It's so annoying!
Once it has activated, knowing my luck it'll probably be super slow or something Wink

Re: w00t broadband!

It downloads at about 250 kilobytes a second, the upload speed won't be anywhere near that since at most the upload speed is only ment to go at 1mbps (which is about 125kilobytes a second)...

I just downloaded 105mb in about 6+mins, on dial up that would have taken 6 hours Razz
And I finished a download that was going to take atleast another 40+mins with dial up, in less then a min

Re: w00t broadband!

Post by Hellblade on Wed Jan 13 2010, 00:20

hmm, online games work worse now then before, they are much slower at sending/receiving data (which is strange, since before with FDM I was downloading at 450+kilobytes per second, and dial up downloads at 5kilobytes p/s Razz)

It's not my wireless card..

Anyone have any ideas before I ask my ISP?
