Google Chrome

Post by Support on Fri Jun 11 2010, 04:55

I was checking out competitors browsers and reluctantly download Google Chrome, I wouldn't say it was much faster than other browsers and it certainly isn't stable (I have windows vista and am using the latest version as I have only just downloaded it.)

Within 5 minutes it crashed loading a flash video... I get the message "Whoa! Google Chrome has crashed. Restart now?"

So I press ok and the same message appears again, and I press ok and it does it again.

Now visually I would like to say that Google Chrome isn't particularly aesthetically pleasing as other browsers such as Safari and Runecats Explorer (If I don't say so myself) < It's ok because yes I made the graphics HD in 1.7 but all graphics were made by Catherine.

I like the quick access sites, however google do harvest data which I find is very unethical even if they are only using it for advertising.

The unified address bar and minimalistic menus are good (forever for less computer illiterate users may be confusing.)

So who hear uses Google Chrome at all, is it all just over rated and hyped up or am I just unlucky and over critical?

Post by Hellblade on Fri Jun 11 2010, 06:06

I don't like it.
I only use it for checking my Mum's email, because it's faster to start up then IE generally. because I'm signed in on FireFox, so I can't be bothered signing out then in then out then in.....

I deleted the google update files, it runs ALL THE TIME
ALL THE TIME
You can only stop it but deleteing or renaming it..that's one thing I particually don't like, it makes you wonder why it needs to run all the time.... and it's Google...they are always looking for information arn't they?.....

well this is reviving a dead forum lol, but my dad for some reason LOVES Chrome... it's not bad for searching for things really quick... but i wouldn't do long term surfing on it... i'll stick to firefox, even though the programs load times differ greatly Firefox is WAY faster when it finally loads lol. plus customization is a must for me.

Incorrect same engine not source.

Runecats Explorer has the same engine as IE but RE runs much much better than IE as the engine is optimised, just like webkit is optimised differently for chrome and safari. Plus safari is much sexier in looks then the fugly chrome.

Netscape has the same engine as Firefox, but a lot of people hate netscape and like firefox..

Netscape is very old now, and never used to work well. Back when I was a kid, I had "Mozilla", "Netscape" and "IE" - Mozilla was the best one to work which was why we always used it. Netscape isn't really around now, the project ended in 2008.

I use FireFox 4. It looks good, runs well, good customisation, good performance once loaded (well, Flash doesn't always work soo well, but FF 4 is still in beta and such.. and I don't use flash much) Also, in Computing when we were doing the web coding topic, FF was the only browser out of FF, Chrome and IE that loaded the fav icon of one of my websites (well, I only made two, and the second one didn't have a fav icon).

I use Flash blocker on all my browsers, such a resource hogger, I mean flash development is a major resource hog but the content shouldn't be..

When I develop using flash I always export as a movie or animated gif, can't wait for html5 export, I would love it to come as an update in CS5 (so costly upgrading CS3 to CS5... only just upgraded).

The computers at my college have IE and FF but I run RE from my memory stick Very Happy

Yes netscape is discontinued but still uses the EXACT same engine.

Yeah, will be good if a lot of people are able to export to HTML5 and don't use Flash anymore Wink

Haha.

Haha, well, FireFox 4 uses a newer version of Gecko so they don't use the exact same engine, but yes, they both do use Gecko Razz

That's actually true I didn't know they updated it in 3.5 upwards, but Firefox 3 was still using the exact same version as netscape navigator.

Hmm... did you download the beta, dev, or Canary version? Those crash more frequently.

Nathan wrote:(I have windows vista[...])
Ahh, nevermind. That explains it.

Anyway, I personally like Chrome for quick browsing. I don't usually use it for long periods of time, but it's definitely much faster than Firefox (of course, that's probably because I have a hundred addons and fifty tabs open in Firefox at any given time). And I rarely have problems with it crashing or anything. And I do like the idea of each tab opening in a separate process. Makes managing whatever crashes I do have easier.

IE9 now has separate processes for each tab.

now lets list the other features:

it's uglier
the separate tabs don't really work very often
it crashes really often
it has less features

I use Mac OSX and Windows 7 via Bootcamp, and chrome is not particularly stable on either, so it's not just Vista.

but lets be fair Safari and even my own blood Runecats Explorer are not even perfectly stable but those are the two I use depending on OS.

^ Runecats Explorer crashes far far far far less than Safari though Smile

Wait, are you still talking about IE? Because yeah, I definitely agree. But Chrome pretty much is the opposite of all of those. It looks nice (and leaves as much space as possible for the page, instead of taking up space with status bars and such), the tabs seem to work fairly well, it hardly ever crashes unless you've got the dev build, and the extensions mean it has lots of features.

Ah, well I don't like IE9 much either, but Chrome's pretty nice overall. Not good for long-term browsing, though, as opening a lot of tabs quickly increases the memory it takes.

CPU hog, try chrome with 30 tabs all with Flash content Laughing

Flash and Chrome are both CPU hogs which is why I dislike both Razz

RE freezes the webpages when not in use so even if you have 200 tabs it wont use any more CPU (if it does a tiny little bit more) than 1 tab Smile

Lol, yeah. I'm not a big fan of Flash in general. It can be really nice, but when phishing sites make all these Flash scam ads and stick fifty of them on one page, I can't stand it.

And really? Didn't know RE did that. That's pretty awesome Razz
